good fiction is hard to come by

I've really let myself down in how little I've been reading this summer. Sure, I can come up with great excuses like CoronaSummer and working aaall the time. However, reading should be a pastime I enjoy and not a chore! I used to read quite avidly as a child and preteen. At 13, I read Harry Potter books 4-8 in eight days. That's a whopping 2,616 pages in eight days. Honestly, it's a resume-worthy feat.
Anyways, the point is that I miss reading for pleasure instead of college or scripture-based study (of course reading the Bible brings me pleasure, but you get what I'm trying to say, I love a good fiction novel to bring me into a different world!)
I recently went to the beloved Barnes & Noble, perused for an hour-ish, and came back with a novel ready to fly away to Wonderland!
One of my favorite stories and Disney movies is Alice in Wonderland. The story is captivating and Lewis Carroll was for sure high when he came up with this world. Alice is a misunderstood girl and suddenly thrust into a narrative of impossible things, talking rabbits with pocketwatches, and mad hatters. As I said, it's quite captivating.
The book I picked is called Alice by Christina Henry. I'm barely a quarter of the way through, but so far I've truly enjoyed it. Alice is a darker and more mature take on what happened to Alice after her trip to Wonderland. It's a perfect novel for someone like me, who grew up loving Alice in her innocence and has aged to enjoy more mature content and can handle gory and heavy scenes. While it is a pretty dark book, I've enjoyed the creativity Henry brings to Alice and Hatcher's adventure as well as the intelligent psychological game and maze we as readers must navigate.
